Everyday we are surrounded by the rich, the beautiful, and the thin. Cover girls inundate consumers at every turn.  The problem is the image you see on the cover of the latest Glamour magazine has been twisted and tweaked, colored and edited, unflawed and thinned out. Seriously, have you ever seen a model with muffin top? Thin as seen on TV or at your local newsstand is an illusion. Getting and staying in shape is important for your well being, but not at the expense of your health. There are health problems on both sides of the aisles. You can be too skinny. The goal is balance. Keeping your attitude positive is half the battle.  Sure, dieting is fine, exercise is great, but the battle of the mind and an affirmative body image is biggest hurdle in overcoming that luscious lie. The mind is a powerful tool. What you think about you bring about, so if losing weight is your goal, thinking good thoughts about you might speed up the process.

First things first, you are not defined by your body. You may have fat on your thighs; this does not mean you are fat. It simply means your thighs need some work. This is much more manageable than looking in the mirror and telling yourself how fat you are. Be realistic. You are beautiful, your hair looks great, that dress is perfect for your interview, and you did fabulous on that latest project. Define yourself by your achievements, not by what you might consider your shortcomings.

Next, remember that happiness comes from inside you. Being thin will not make you happy. It will only make you thin. Set a long-term goal for yourself and do not constantly worry about our weight. Again, worry is made up of negative thoughts and negative thoughts are not helpful for believing in you. They are also a waste of time. This is time that could be spent at the gym or jogging around the block. If losing weight is your goal, use your time to achieve it, not worry about it. That could mean you throw out that scale. Does seeing what you weigh everyday actually change what you weigh? The obvious answer is ‘no’ and it can be very discouraging. Water weight alone can make you gain back those two pounds you thought you lost yesterday. If you have to have a scale, use it wisely and infrequently. Your best judgment will be how your clothes are fitting you. If you don’t go up a size you are doing something right. If you find your jeans need a belt, you have really hit the mark! However, if you simply must weigh in, set aside one day a week for this ritual. Make sure it is the same time each week and that you are consistent in what you are wearing (or not wearing!). Again though, don’t give the scale more credit than it is worth.

If you are watching your body image, you are going to want to watch who you hang out with. If you have friends that are way too self absorbed in how much they weigh, you might want to find different friends. Weight is not a definition of you and those you choose to be with should accept you for who you are. That is not to say you shouldn’t find encouraging friends, but there is a difference between encouraging you to eat the right thing, and influencing you to throw it up.

Always seek to improve yourself but remember that what you see on TV is not a true reality show. We choose our thinking, our path, and yes ultimately, we can choose to be content with our weight.

People always want to know how to stay young looking. The best way to feel and look younger is in your attitude. Someone said life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you react to it. Happiness leads to longevity and pain can. Lifestyle can also help you look younger. Getting enough sleep and resisting the urge to smoke can help you look younger. A drink here and there is okay but too much drinking can lead to body damage and make you look just plain worn out.

Stress can be the number one factor in looking older. Find ways in your life to reduce stress and find ways to get yourself out of stressful situations. Even if it is your mind try to let stress and worry go. It will do nothing to help any situation better so there is no need to stress over it. Relax, get a massage and let it go. All of these will help you learn how to stay young looking.
